John died of a heart attack in his office at the Lane Co. Department of Youth Services, where he was a highly regarded and respected counselor to troubled youth.   He was born in Buffalo, Minn., to T. Askew and Janet Christley Crumbley. He married Cheryl Crumbley on July 28, 1989, in Eugene.

Crumbley held a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Oregon. He worked for the Lane County Department of Youth Services for 28 years.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kelda Rericha and Holly Barnum, both of Portland; two brothers, Bob of Brier, Wash., and Paul of Hyde Park, Utah; and a sister, Cathy Crumbley of Lowell, Mass.
