Forum usage
Posted Saturday, December 5, 2009 08:03 PM

I'm puzzled about why we aren't using this forum. It could be that everyone's too busy, or doesn't have anything to say to each other, or that the forum is oddly arranged and hard to use. There might be other reasons, too.

I'm not complaining, though I do think it would be nice to hear from some of you and that we could have some interesting exchanges. I'm just curious about why there's been so little activity here, so I'm asking a favor. Please tell me if you're just not interested, if you've tried and it didn't work, or let me know if there's another reason. There's no send button, so just hit "Save," to post whatever you type in. If you try and aren't able to post, please email me at: ksublette@gmail.com.

Thanks!

Karen

I think the main reasons you aren't seeing many posts are that not many Prometheans are aware of these forums, and  I'm also not sure they know what to say to people they haven't spoken to in 43 years.  Even the cliques either only lasted a few years, or they communicate by other means.  Getting in touch with other Prometheans now is more like a "let's get acquainted" all over again, as we are closer to being strangers than old friends.

It's funny how the years pass, but the memories still seem like yesterday, just fuzzier.  It reminds me of the song "Those Were The Days" that came out in the sixties.

One of my sons suggested that a way is needed to bring a lot of smart people together to solve problems.  My answer was that a reasonable blog site could do that.

If we were so motivated this could become the Promethean Think Tank -- present your problems to be solved, and a whole lot of bright people can give their two-bits worth -- and we've all got a wide diversity of experiences under our belts that we sure didn't have back in the 60's.

Also, letting people know that they can do something fun and useful can attrack a lot of us over-achieving brainiacs to the Promethean forum and common goals.

Thanks for responding, James. You’re right that most of us are more strangers than old friends to each other. Still…we are intelligent strangers of similar age, who grew up, at least partially, in Southern Oregon, during the same interesting time,  and who shared an unusual and powerful (for many) six week experience in the late sixties. That’s really quite a lot of fairy important stuff to have in common. I’m interested in the pool of people that we are.

Your son’s suggestion comes up often in Mensa forums. It does seem attractive. Working with other minds to solve problems sounds pretty satisfying. Other, possibly less productive, possibilities also exist and might be as desirable. I think it’s worth getting to know each other, just because knowing each other seems interesting, fun, and good.

Besides the “over-achieving brainiacs” among us, we have our share of less showy, contemplative under-achievers, too.  I am clearly one of the latter group and am curious about the whole business of achievement (among myriad other subjects).  Some of us are probably nicely balanced, too,  I suppose. That must feel good.

Whether we solve any problems,  achieve or produce anything, or not,  I’d like to know what some of you are thinking. What do you wonder about? What do you care about? What do you think about anything anyone else has said?
